LongShan Game Studio

Your first ten games will suck — so get them out of the way fast.

The Art of Game Design A Book of Lenses. by Jesse Schell

In the eyes of many, designing a game is as simple as it gets. It's not until you actually do it that you realise it's really simple, so simple that all you need is an idea, and a grammar that doesn't need to be too good. Of course it's not easy to do it right, it's not easy to do any creative work, how do I make something different? How do I make the game more interesting? Even the most experienced people can't answer that.

The most important thing for newcomers to do is not to think, but to do. As Professor Jesse Schell said, at the beginning you just can't make anything good, a piece of junk is still a piece of junk no matter how much you embellish it, when you have this realisation you might as well try something new and start a new design, don't always stick to one piece of work or you'll be stuck in the endless cycle of never reaching the end of the line.

LongShan Game Studio is a studio with only myself, you can also call it a rubbish bin, the only point of its existence is to store all the junk I make. The first time I made a game was back in my freshman year of college when I had just finished learning C. I wrote a very, very simple pixel RPG in C, with one scene, a few lines of dialogue, and nothing else, and then it was selected as an outstanding work because of its outstanding art. In a group of real experience-ready game titles, this one of mine wasn't even junk.

LongShan Game Studio will be with me on a long journey to document everything I do not only in the past, but for a long time to come.

Q: Why is it called the LongShan Game Studio?

A: Including the names of the previously established Longshan Server and Longshan Railway Bureau, they all came from the same place - Erlong Shan Mountain next to North University of China. Erlong Shan Mountain is the spiritual totem in the hearts of all North University of China students, like a guardian god, accompanying generations of students as they grow up.

Q: What is the connection with the Longshan Railway Bureau?

A: The LongShan Game Studio was born out of the Longshan Railway Bureau, but of course both of these virtual organisations were set up by myself alone, so it's not really necessary to care about any connection between them, they can be one or separate.

Q: Are others welcome?

A: Of course, although the studio doesn't have specific goals and won't necessarily be producing any group projects in the future. If you'd like to come along and make friends and share experiences, then welcome to the LongShan Game Studio.
